2019: Full text of Saraki’s declaration to run for presidency
Senate President, DR Bukola Saraki has just declared his intention to seek the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria against the incumbent President.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Thursday formally declared his intention to run for presidency in the 2019 general elections.
Saraki announced his intention while speaking to youths at an event which held Sheraton hotel, Abuja
In his speech, Saraki promised to set the right course for Nigeria.
His full speech below:
1. Let me say, once again, how wonderful it is to see so many talented and purposeful young people at this first edition of the Public Dialogue Series with Political Parties on Youth Candidacy and Party Primaries. Looking at you, I see future leaders who present themselves as capable and worthy to take on the mantle of leadership in this country, and this gladdens my heart.
2. From my interactions with many of you, and with your contemporaries across the country, I can see that we are blessed with a determined generation that stands ready to join with us to power a Nigerian renaissance. The quality of people I see here today affirms my belief that, indeed, you are Not Too Young To Run.
3. I deeply appreciate this opportunity to share some of my ideas about where we are as a nation, as well as the challenges before us as we approach the great decider that is the 2019 General Elections.
4. It is widely acknowledged that ours is a relatively ‘young’ country bursting with tremendous energy, ability and potential. More than 70 per cent of our population is under the age of 40. You are indeed the future of this country. Ordinarily, such a young population would be the envy of many Western countries that are faced with ageing populations, but the dire state of our affairs tarnishes the youthful advantage that we have.
5. Up and down our country today, Nigerians are crying out for succour. Many of our children are hungry. Many people are dying of avoidable or otherwise treatable diseases. Many have fallen below basic living standards, and are now among the 87 million that sealed Nigeria’s position as the country with the highest number of people in extreme poverty. Our young people lack opportunities. The necessary education facilities and system to equip them for the future simply do not exist. We are not creating the jobs needed to usefully engage them in order to grow our economy. And too often, the youth feel shut out, prevented from having any say in the direction of this nation.
6. The harsh conditions of extreme poverty faced by the people, fuels the state of insecurity all over the country. Hunger, lack of education and lack of opportunities push many Nigerians into criminal activities including terrorism. Many of our communities are paralysed with fear – due to incessant communal crises, kidnappings and other social ills, as well as the threat of terrorism. We are failing abysmally to tackle the problems of today and to prepare for the future.
7. Our economy is broken and is in need of urgent revival in order for Nigeria to grow. GDP growth rate has declined. Diversification remains an illusion. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Businesses are shutting down. Jobs are being lost in record numbers, and the capital needed to jumpstart our economy is going elsewhere.
8. Nigeria is perhaps more divided now than ever before. We are increasingly divided along regional, religious and ethnic lines. Nigerians are also divided by class, a festering gulf between the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have-Nots’. The fault lines of this nation are widening to an alarming degree. We must do something fast, and we must be brave about it.
9. We must ensure the security of lives in Nigeria. As things stand now, no one is safe in this country. No one feels truly safe. We must restore the sanctity of the rule of law and strengthen democratic institutions in order to build a just, fair and equitable society for all. We must rebuild the trust of our people in government. We need a new generation of leaders that are competent, with the capability to rise to the challenges of the 21st century. We must pull this country back together and rebuild, block by block, with dedication and commitment.
10. You will agree with me that this is an urgent task that requires the concerted efforts of each and every one of us. If we look around today, what do we see? What is the condition of our citizens? Where are we as a nation? How are we perceived locally and internationally? Why are we not making the expected progress? Why are we not growing? There is no time to waste. The time is now, to come together to stimulate growth in Nigeria, especially in the national economy.
11. The choice we face in the forthcoming election is either to keep things as they are, or make a radical departure from the old ways. To find a better way of doing things or keep repeating the mistakes of the past. To fix the problems or keep compounding them.
12. It is with all these in mind, and taking account of the challenges that I have outlined, that I have decided to answer the call of teeming youth who have asked me to run for President. Accordingly, I hereby announce my intention to run for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the coming General Elections in 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I do so with the firm conviction that I have what it takes to secure inclusive growth for Nigeria and Nigerians.
13. My Plan for Nigeria has inclusion in all aspects of the country’s affairs as a central pillar. Every citizen has the inalienable right to feel a sense of belonging, no matter their background or creed, or what part of the country they come from. No matter who you voted for or what your convictions are, government must work for you.
14. Your generation does not deserve to live in the poverty capital of the world. It is no longer an issue of how we got here, but how do we get out of this situation? I promise you that I will lead the fight and employ every God-given resource available to us in turning things around. I am determined to grow Nigeria out of poverty. We will stimulate the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as one of the ways of energising the economy and to create wealth for our people, especially the youth.
15. I want to see the youth play major roles at all levels, not only in government but also in the private sector and indeed in every area of Nigerian life. This will be a government driven by youthful energy, innovation and a pioneering entrepreneurial spirit. Nigerian youth will be given all the opportunities to realise their potential to the full within a national framework that guarantees inclusiveness. For youth who have ideas and capacity, we will make sure that there is funding for their ventures; and we shall build on the Made in Nigeria legislation as part of our job creation drive.
16. My plan is to secure Nigeria by redesigning our national security architecture, while adequately equipping our security agencies to fulfil their primary role of protecting lives and property.
17. I will address our infrastructural deficit through aggressive financing initiatives including mutually beneficial PPP arrangements, regular floating of bonds and other financial instruments, which will ensure stable, adequate and reliable funding to see to the completion of core projects especially road, rail and power.
18. My plan is to protect all Nigerians and defend their constitutional rights and freedoms. I will stand for and uphold at all times the principle of the rule of law, which is the bedrock of democratic governance.
19. Ours will not be a selective fight against corruption. The emphasis will be on strengthening institutions, with a particular focus on deterrence. We cannot afford to compromise our institutions with proxy wars against perceived political opponents. We see the fight against corruption as crucial to Nigeria’s economic development.
20. I offer leadership driven by empathy. Where leaders are responsive to the citizens. Where they know that government cares. We will not be indifferent or turn a blind eye to the real concerns of our people. Every single Nigerian life matters.
21. For me, the leadership we deserve is one that will be a source of pride to all Nigerians, one that will be respected and admired in Africa and around the world. It should be a leadership that can hold its own and stand tall anywhere in the world. That is the type of leadership I offer.
22. As a former two-term Governor and currently President of the Senate by the grace of God, I believe I possess a unique blend of executive and legislative experience to push for and implement reforms that will deliver real improvements in the daily lives of our people. I know what it takes to create jobs and grow the economy. I can make the tough decisions when it matters. I will spearhead a new agenda that can transform the lives of ordinary Nigerians in real terms.
23. Believe me when I say that it will not be business as usual. This will be a dynamic government of action that will pursue the growth of Nigeria with doggedness, determination and conviction. I will lead a result-driven administration. We shall set targets with clear timelines to ensure that anticipated deliverables are met. You can benchmark us and hold us accountable. In short, I assure you that I will deliver on all promises. What I envision is a new chapter in governance in this country. We will be driven by what is best for Nigerians.
25. I have deliberately chosen the opportunity of being here with you, my Number One constituency who I see as the future of our great country, to make my intention known. I believe the Nigerian youth are critical to rebuilding and growing the economy, and restoring our national pride.
26. I therefore ask you and all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with me in this noble cause.
My brothers, My sisters, Let’s Grow Nigeria Together.
God bless you all.

PRESIDENT BUHARI UNDERGO 800 METERS WALK IN HIS HOMETOWN
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday proved he’s fit to continue in office as President of the country.
The president who celebrated Eid-el-Kabir in his hometown Daura, Katsina state shunned protocols and walked 800 meters from the prayer ground to his residence, amid cheers from well wishers.
Spokesman of the president, Garba Shehu said there are two things to learn.
“One is that the president is responsive to the enormous support and commitment of his own people that came out in their numbers to see him.
“And he just decided that he couldn’t go on riding in a black vehicle, and he came out and walked the distance.
“The second thing, he is curious that these days, one or two people who are aspiring to be president are campaigning on their youthfulness and good health.
“I think the president has done one thing today – that the issue is not how old one is but how fit he is; how healthy he is.
“That the president has proven his fitness and wellbeing to continue in office is a settled matter.”
Shehu further advised individuals who wants to campaign against the president to do so “on issues that are of significance to Nigerians,” because “the president is fit. He is healthy. He is good to go for a second term.”
This is coming after governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal suggested that Buhari should not seek re-election on account of his age.
“We love President Buhari and that was why we supported him in 2015 unconditionally. But when things are wrong, we have to tell him.
“We still believe in his integrity, patriotism and courage. But these are not enough for a leader.
“We all know that there is a vacuum in the government, occasioned by his disposition, probably because of his old age or health condition.
“That is why Nigerians are yearning for younger ones to lead this country.”
During the Salah celebration, Buhari also received members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who paid him a courtesy call.
“I think the NYSC is one of the best things to happen to Nigeria, because it gives young Nigerians opportunity to see and know different parts of the country,” Buhari said.
Prayers were offered by individuals for the peace and unity of the country.

KIM KARDASHIAN AND KANYE WEST PLANS BABY NO 4
Seven month after welcoming their daughter Chicago, the celebrity couples are planning on having a fourth child.
A source revealed: “[They] have one last embryo left,” adding that the sex is male.
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, 37, and the Grammy winner, 41, plan to have the embryo implanted in a gestational carrier “soon,” a second insider tells Us.
This is not the first time the celebrity couples are turning to surrogacy. After Kim suffered high-risk pregnancies with daughter North, 5, and son Saint, 2, due to preeclampsia and placenta accreta, they hired a gestational carrier for Chicago.
Three days after the birth of Chicago, Kim disclosed on her website that it wasn’t safe for her to birth a child herself.
“Doctors said that it wasn’t safe for me — or the baby’s — health to carry on my own.
“After exploring many options, Kanye and I decided to use a gestational carrier. Although I have used the term surrogate in the past, a gestational carrier is actually the technical term for a woman who carries a baby that she has no biological relationship to. A traditional surrogate donates her egg, is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm and then carries the baby to term. Since we implanted my fertilized egg in our gestational carrier, our baby is biologically mine and Kanye’s.”
Kim has always expressed her desired to have a big family. However, she told Elle in April that she’ll likely draw the line after baby number 4.
“My time is spread really thin. And I think it’s important that in all couples, the mom gives the husband as much attention as the kids.”
It is still unknown if Kimye will be making use of thr same carrier or a new one.

LINDA IKEJI’S TWITTER SUSPENSION MARKS A CHANGE IN TWITTER’S ENFORCEMENT OF VIOLATION POLICIES
Last week, the Twitter account of blogger Linda Ikeji was suspended.
At the time of writing this piece, Ikeji’s account is still in digital purgatory, arising from an ongoing action by Twitter to purge its platform from bots and spammy accounts and clamp down on users who violate its policies.
Ikeji’s suspension has seen Nigerian Twitter devolve into debates and hot takes.
Her offence? Most likely the sexualised content involving two children published on her eponymous blog, looped from her Twitter account and was reported by the children’s mother.
Given the nature of the internet and how things go viral, Ikeji’s blog joined a multitude of sites amplifying that particular content as fodder and thus exposing the minors involved to audiences beyond who then exposed the children to abuse and toxicity.
The only problem I have with Linda Ikeji is her not taking down a content when the person involved or affected asks her to. TheShaderoom has stopped posting about Cardi B after she asked them to stop. It’s simple, respect dem and delete, it might b affecting dem or their families
— Tessyama (@tescool)
August 17, 2018 “
The problem is not that Linda Ikeji lifts what you post online, it’s that she couches it in such a way that her blog vultures devour you.
It is that she’s now ‘big’ in her jagaja journalism&she can choose not to post certain things but she’s too morally bankrupt to consider that
— Aunty Sidi (@Aunty_Les)
August 17, 2018
The Linda Ikeji Blog has become infamous for attracting the worst of Nigerians.
Perhaps because Linda has promoted a culture where she refuses to regulate the community that has grown around the content she shares, attracting the vilest commenters, the apex dispensers of the Nigerian internet vitriol who have been shut out everywhere else.
The reputation Ikeji gained from unethical gossip blogging has been bad, repeated cases of privacy violation that can fill a book and provided the blueprint for her successful blogging trajectory.
The aforementioned sexualised content was reportedly taken down by other platforms, as requested, but Ikeji didn’t respond when the legal representatives for the family in question reached out to her.
Although her blog is still fully operational, Twitter has played its part; its policy on publishing private details or property on the platform is abundantly clear, and it’s considered as one of the most serious violations of the Twitter Rules.
Twitter is also aware that not all postings are a violation of the policy but states that if the publicly available information is being shared to harass or incite harassment, then it may take enforcement action under their abusive behaviour policy.
Tellingly, Nigeria’s cyber laws aren’t stringent enough, as it has shaped an internet culture of online theft, copyright infringement and privacy violation.
In 2013, renowned blogger Perez Hilton was slapped with a $2.1m claim for copyright infringement after he used photos taken by a New York Times photographer and tried to pass them off as his.
The following year, and after the massive celebrity nude photo leak, Hilton removed nude pictures of Jennifer Lawrence and Victoria Justice from his website and apologised , saying in a tweet that he didn’t feel “comfortable” keeping the images on his site.
“Putting gossip on the internet is like throwing meat to alligators,” Daniel J. Solove writes in his book The Future of Reputation: Gossip, Rumor, and Privacy on the Internet , “When information is on the internet, many people may readily link to it, talk about it, copy it, repost it, and so on.”
While Solove thinks gossip bloggers shouldn’t be held liable for damages, he is of the opinion that victims should be able to seek legal recourse against bloggers who don’t honour requests to delete or suppress private information.
Already, there’s a galvanising legal campaign against Ikeji which, I think, will seek to punish her for alleged unethical journalism. That said, entertaining the possibility of a behemoth like Ikeji buying her way out of a lawsuit feels slightly dispiriting.
And although it will take some time, her Twitter account will be handed back to her and followers will be cultivated. Then, her suspension would only feel like a slap on the wrist.
Perhaps repeated offences will see her permanently removed from the platform. And this is something she should worry about.

Popular, Ghanaian actress Joselyn Dumas has denied ever stating that she once dated John Dumelo. Reports were everywhere last week stating that the curvy actress confirmed past rumors that she was involved in a romantic relationship with the actor. This was due to an interview she had with Abeiku Santana on his ‘ATUU’ show. The actress also stated that she was disappointed in the interviewer.
Reacting to the reports, Joselyn released a statement with claims that the interview was doctored to say what the interviewers wanted the public to know.
In the interview, Joselyn Dumas stated that she never dated John and that she only grew fond of him after they featured in about 3 movies back to back. That close relationship made them become very good friends.
“I never dated John Dumelo. I didn’t have a crush on John Dumelo.
However, I got fond of him. He became my very good friend. We were friends, he liked me and I also liked him and that was it,” she said in response to Abeiku’s question if she ever dated John.
Joselyn Dumas further stated that the falsehood portrayed by those who interviewed her is one of the reasons why herself and some of her colleagues don’t grant interviews anymore because of the fear of being misrepresented falsely.
FG SET TO GIVE LOANS TO TWO MILLION TRADERS WITHOUT COLLATERAL
The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated a new initiative to empower two million petty traders across the country between now and the end of the year. The initiative called the Trader Moni is meant to further enlarge the present administration’s financial inclusion agenda for all Nigerians regardless of social class and economic status.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Read the Full Statement Below:
In a determined and significant bid to further enlarge its financial inclusion agenda for all Nigerians regardless of social class and economic status, the Buhari administration has launched a new initiative under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), called the TraderMoni, which will empower two million petty traders between now and the end of the year.
The scheme, which was launched last week in Lagos, would grant a minimum of 30,000 loans in each State of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
All together, the 2 million mark is expected to be attained on or before the end of this year, with petty traders in Lagos, Kano and Abia States set to be the first round of beneficiaries to draw the collateral free loans.
In addition to the 30,000 loans per State, States with larger populations like Lagos and Kano are expected to get more than 30,000 loans. Across the country, especially in the pilot states, about 500,000 potential beneficiaries have so far been enumerated.
In order to identify the beneficiaries, no less than 4,000 enumeration agents have been engaged by the Bank of Industry which is deploying the new scheme.
TraderMoni is designed to help petty traders expand their trade through the provision of collateral free loans of N10,000. The loans are repayable within a period of six months.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries can get access to a higher facility ranging from N15,000 to N50,000 when they repay N10,000 within the stipulated time period.
The goal of the Buhari Administration is to use the TraderMoni to take financial inclusion down to the grassroots, the bottom of the ladder, considering the contribution of petty traders to economic development. The Federal Government is also aware of the fact that many of the petty traders don’t have what the commercial banks require to grant them loans.
This administration is keen to ensure that such traders at that level are able to build their businesses and grow.
TraderMoni was launched last Tuesday in five markets in Lagos State, with tens of thousands beneficiaries already.
The Lagos markets already reached are Mushin, Ikotun, Agege, Ketu, and Abule Egba markets.
The scheme will soon be taken to other states in the country, with Abia and Kano states next in line.
Beneficiaries are already heaping praise on the Buhari administration for this initiative that will improve their businesses.
A trader in one of the Lagos markets, Anna Enwerem, thanked President Buhari for the initiatives.
“I sell clothes. This N10,000 would do a lot for me and my children. I like this programme so much. I will pay the loan before six months’ time. Before I didn’t believe it, but now that I have received my money I believe,” she said.
Similarly, Chief Mrs Mufiat Adewumi, a market women leader in Lagos, said it will help ordinary Nigerians who cannot have access to commercial banks’ credit facilities because they don’t have collateral, “We are happy about the TraderMoni because this is what we have been expecting for long, that the Government should assist the masses, especially the traders. 'We counsel Oshiomhole that the positions of the Senate president do not belong to political parties' - PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party has cautioned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole to stop his 'obsession' to change the leadership of the Senate, 'as such is completely out of his reach'.
The party in a statement released today counsels Oshiomhole to stop his ' childish tantrums and get educated on the fact that the positions of the Senate President and that of Deputy Senate President do not belong to political parties but to Nigerians, who elect persons into the seats through their elected representatives in the Senate'.
'Oshiomhole should also stop exposing his ignorance in thinking that the Senate leadership can be changed by his inconsequential orders as a factional chairman of a political party, when the law is settled that such power is vested only on the two-third votes, representing 73 of the 109 senators. We know that Oshiomhole is under intense pressure from the Presidency to overheat the polity, distract the National Assembly members and make as much effort to cause a constitutional crisis in the country, having realized that they cannot win the 2019 general elections.
However, the PDP strongly cautions these desperate power grabbers to note that their actions have unlimited capacity to destroy our democracy. Nigerians have noted that since his imposition as the factional Chairman of the APC, Mr. Oshiomhole, has done nothing but spewing hate speeches and officially introducing a thug mentality into the polity, while causing confusion in every sector of our national life, including the Federal Executive Council, the security system, our legislature as well as in his dysfunctional APC, which as an undertaker, he is finally set to bury.
Since Oshiomhole assumed office, the nation has witnessed various unimaginable constitutional infractions, including the invasion of Benue State House of Assembly and the Ekiti state Government House by APC-Controlled federal security agencies, the escalated harassment of federal legislators and persons perceived to be averse to APCs’ re-election bid; the siege at the residences of Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu by security agencies as well as the recent invasion of the National Assembly by security operatives.
While the PDP invites Nigerians and the international community to note the activities of Mr. Oshiomhole, as being directed by the Presidency, the party hold firmly that they are fighting a lost battle as they cannot cow Nigerians into changing their resolve to end this nightmare by voting the APC out and returning our nation to the path of peace, national cohesion and economic prosperity, on the platform of the repositioned PDP, come 2019.
